Several weeks ago, I tweeted about the IBM survey showing that CEOs now think the skill most needed by effective
leaders is…drumroll please…creativity. This study has since been picked up and blogged about all over the place. One of the most interesting posts on this topic is over at Forbes.com by Colette Martin, titled Creativity is the New Black. Leave it to a woman with a French first name to put a fashion slant on my favorite subject. So wait! Does this mean that the stereotype of the shabbily dressed, mentally-challenged artist will now be replaced by that of well-adjusted women and men strutting their creativity in tastefully neutral business attire? Actually, that’s not at all what Ms. Martin’s post is about. Visit her post to learn more about this groundbreaking survey. Then please come back here and let me know what you think about creativity going mainstream!

Nice to see creativity get the respect it deserves! For a long while we’ve privileged mathematical thinking above all else (the IQ test bears no small responsibility in that matter), even above the ability to solve problems creatively. Maybe the theory of multiple intelligences is finally making inroads…
Hey Kelly, great to see you over here. Yeah, how many decades has that theory of multiple intelligences been around? As Colette Martin suggests in her post, it’s one thing for a CEO study to tout creativity as a leadership essential; it’s another thing for front line leaders to actually encourage fresh ideas from the troops. Fingers crossed!
By the way, were you the writer on SheWrites who suggested that we deliberately visit other members’ blogs? In any case, it’s always a treat to have someone comment. Thanks!
